While it officially ended November 9 th at the state meet, many runners continue through the Nike Southeast Regional at Wake Med Park. The top 2 teams in the Championship races earn free trips to Portland, Oregon so the meet draws the top teams from all over the southeast. It is always a bit of an unknown in terms of how the runners perform asfor many it has been 6 weeks since the last 5K. 32 Green Hope runners trained for the event and were ready to go. The Girl’s Rising Stars race was the 1 st race of the day and started at 8:20am. 7 Falcon ladies were ready to run fast and 4 of the 7 girls in the race set new career PRs led by Katie Foppiano (21:00). The 2 nd race of the day was the Boy’s Rising Stars. The boys have had a very strong group of young runners all year, but one of their top 3 runners could not compete due to an injury suffered a few days earlier and the team finished 4 th ,only 9 pts out of 2 nd in a strong field. Freshman Gavin Hansen (16:52) and sophomore Jacob Kurak (17:05) led the boys as each ran a new career best time. The Girl’s Open race was the 3 rd race of the day. Only 4 Falcons were entered in this race sothe girls would not get a team score, but Lauren Sims set the tone early getting out fast and keeping her quick pace as she ran a 64-second personal best of 21:15. The upperclassmen boys not racing in the championship race ran in the Boy’s Open 2 Race as there were so many teams entered in the boy’s open races that the meet organizers split the field into 2. Junior Erik Scheeres went out and ran a huge 43-second PR by running 17:29. He was followed by Gabe DaSilva (PR of 17:44) and Dylan Snyder (PR of 17:55). After the Communityrace the last race with Green Hope runners was the Boy’s Championship Race at 11:10. The boys did not expect to be in the hunt for a top 2 spot in the race, but hoped to run fast times to finish the year. None of the boys set career PRs on the muddy course, but they ran well and finished 19 th out of 31 of the top teams from the southeastern U.S. Thomas Vo led the Falcons one final time with a very good time of 15:45. Thomas was followed by fellow seniors Liam McBride (16:37) and Michael Taylor (16:41). Great Season All!
